LEGISLATIVE LEADERS INTRODUCE JOINT PROPOSAL TO INCREASE NEVADA NURSING GRADUATES BY 50% IN 3 YEARS

(Carson City, NV, March 24, 2023) – Nevada’s healthcare sector is significantly understaffed and does not have an adequate pipeline for most medical professionals to serve the healthcare needs of Nevadans. These labor shortages lead to increased costs and affect patients’ access to care.

This week, Senate Republican Leader Heidi Seevers Gansert, Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager, and Assembly Republican Leader P.K. O’Neill jointly introduced SB 375 to increase the nursing pipeline across Nevada’s 7 higher education institutions by 50% by FY2026. Through an $18M annual investment in the Nevada System of Higher Education’s nursing programs, the proposal will allow Nevada’s nursing schools to grow graduates by hundreds of more nurses compared to the projected totals if no additional investment is made.

“At a time where the State is facing significant shortages in nurses, it makes sense to boost Nevada’s public nursing pipeline. SB 375 will increase the number of nursing graduates by 50% by FY2026. Together, we are working with Nevada’s public nursing schools and leadership from both chambers to help grow our nursing pipeline across Nevada,” Leader Seevers Gansert, Majority Leader Cannizzaro, Speaker Yeager, and Leader O’Neill commented regarding their bipartisan legislation.
